The principle of autonomy holds that the patient has the right to make decisions about their own body and treatment, even when that decision conflicts with medical interests. The nurse's task is to ensure that the patient is fully informed about the risks and still wishes to refuse, and to respect that decision. This is not beneficence (providing benefit) or non-maleficence (avoiding harm).
