A lumbar puncture requires the needle to enter the subarachnoid space. To widen the intervertebral space, the client should be positioned in lateral recumbency with the back flexed into a fetal position, drawing the knees and chin as close to the chest as possible. This position separates the spinous processes of the vertebrae, allowing easier needle entry into the intervertebral space, reducing procedural difficulty and minimizing the risk of nerve root injury.
