Hypokalemia impairs nerve conduction and muscle contraction. When serum potassium is very low, contractility of the respiratory muscles (including the diaphragm and intercostal muscles) decreases, producing shallow, weak respirations, which can lead to carbon dioxide retention and respiratory acidosis. According to the nursing ABC principle (Airway, Breathing, Circulation), impaired respiratory function directly threatens life and must be addressed first. Although the other options are typical findings of hypokalemia, they carry a lower priority compared with the risk of acute respiratory failure.
