A nurse is caring for a client with a new prescription for Lisinopril. Which side effects should the nurse educate the client to report immediately? (Select all that apply.)
- APersistent dry, non-productive cough
- BSwelling of the lips, tongue, or face✓
- CDizziness upon standing
- DElevated serum potassium levels✓
- EDifficulty breathing or swallowing✓
Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor. Life-threatening adverse effects that must be reported immediately are angioedema (swelling of lips, tongue, face) and laryngeal edema causing difficulty breathing or swallowing—both require immediate discontinuation. Hyperkalemia is also dangerous because ACEIs reduce aldosterone and can cause life-threatening arrhythmias. A dry, non-productive cough is common and bothersome but not an emergency; orthostatic dizziness can be managed with slow position changes.
