When a medication error occurs, the nurse's clinical thinking must give priority to patient safety. The first priority is to assess the patient's vital signs and clinical status to determine whether the error has caused any immediate physiological harm. Only after the patient has been confirmed stable should the nurse proceed with notifying the physician and supervisor and completing an incident report/occurrence report.
