獲得知情同意（Informed Consent）是醫師的法律責任。護理師的角色是確認同意書已簽署並放入病歷，若未簽署，必須通知醫師前來解釋並取得病人的簽名。護理師不可代替醫師解釋手術內容，也不能要求家屬簽署（除非是法律代理人且病人無法簽名）。
Obtaining informed consent is the physician's legal responsibility. The nurse's role is to confirm that the consent form has been signed and placed in the chart; if not, the nurse must notify the physician to come and explain the procedure and obtain the client's signature. The nurse must not substitute for the physician in explaining the surgery, nor ask the family to sign (unless they are a legal proxy and the client is unable to sign).
台灣法律對於知情同意非常嚴謹，醫療機構通常備有簽署程序，護理師需確認程序完備以避免法律糾紛。
