An indwelling urinary catheter is a common source of nosocomial infection. According to evidence-based practice, routine irrigation of the catheter is not a preventive measure for infection; on the contrary, it disrupts the closed system and introduces external bacteria into the bladder, increasing the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Unless specifically ordered for the purpose of removing clots or relieving obstruction, routine irrigation is strictly prohibited. Other options, such as keeping the drainage bag below the level of the bladder and regular perineal hygiene, are standard nursing care practices.
