Thyroid storm is the most dangerous, extreme manifestation of hyperthyroidism, characterized by high fever (>101.3°F), severe tachycardia, and delirium or altered consciousness. It is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate cooling and antithyroid medication. Although sepsis (D) can also cause fever, in the setting of underlying hyperthyroidism, thyroid storm should be suspected first.
