A nurse is caring for a client with diabetes insipidus. Which findings should the nurse expect?
- AHigh urine specific gravity
- BPolyuria and polydipsia✓
- COliguria and weight gain
- DHypertension and bradycardia
Diabetes insipidus (DI) is caused by a deficiency of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) or a lack of renal response to it, leaving the kidneys unable to reabsorb water. Clinically, this produces large volumes of dilute urine (polyuria) and extreme thirst due to dehydration (polydipsia). Because the urine lacks solutes, it becomes very dilute, with a very low specific gravity (typically less than 1.005). Hypertension and oliguria are findings of fluid overload or renal failure and are the opposite of the dehydration seen in diabetes insipidus.
