A nurse is working in the triage area of an emergency department. Which client should be seen first?
- AA client reporting chest pain radiating to the jaw✓
- BA client with a small, clean laceration
- CA client with a closed wrist fracture
- DA client with a mild headache for two days
Emergency department triage follows the ABC principle (Airway, Breathing, Circulation), prioritizing conditions that threaten life or organ function. Chest pain radiating to the jaw is a red-flag symptom for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) that may progress to myocardial infarction and requires immediate ECG evaluation and emergency medications to preserve myocardium. The other options, although uncomfortable, are relatively stable or not immediately life-threatening.
