A nurse is caring for a client with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Which symptoms should the nurse monitor for hypoglycemia?
- APolyuria and polydipsia
- BTachycardia and tremors✓
- CFlushed, dry skin
- DKussmaul respirations
Hypoglycemia is defined as a blood glucose level below 70 mg/dL. When blood glucose falls, the body activates the sympathetic nervous system, releasing epinephrine in an attempt to raise the glucose level, which produces the typical adrenergic response. The nurse must be familiar with these early warning signs in order to intervene promptly (for example, by giving rapidly absorbable carbohydrates) before the client's level of consciousness changes, and to prevent progression to neuroglycopenia with coma or seizures.
