A nurse is teaching a client with newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes about foot care. Which statements indicate understanding? (Select all that apply.)
- AI will check my feet daily for blisters or cuts✓
- BI will wear cotton socks to absorb moisture✓
- CI will soak my feet in hot water every night
- DI will buy new shoes in the late afternoon✓
- EI will cut my toenails straight across✓
The key to diabetic foot care is preventing injury and infection. Daily inspection allows early detection of minor wounds; shopping for shoes in the afternoon, when the feet are at their most swollen, helps select a properly fitting size; trimming toenails straight across prevents ingrown-toenail infections; and cotton socks absorb moisture. Soaking in hot water (C) may cause burns due to sensory neuropathy and macerates the skin with prolonged immersion, and should be avoided.
