The three major complications after thyroid surgery are bleeding, recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, and parathyroid injury. Trousseau's sign and fingertip numbness are both manifestations of hypocalcemia (from parathyroid injury) and must be addressed to prevent laryngospasm. Stridor indicates airway narrowing or swelling and can readily progress to airway obstruction, constituting an emergency. Mild hoarseness is common, and a heart rate of 98 beats per minute remains within normal range.
