Which intervention by a nurse is most effective in preventing health care-associated infections (HAIs)?
- AUsing sterile gloves for every interaction
- BProviding prophylactic antibiotics to every client
- CPerforming proper hand hygiene before and after client contact✓
- DLimiting visitors for all clients
Hand hygiene is the simplest, lowest-cost, and most effective measure for preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). According to CDC guidelines, nurses must perform proper hand hygiene (with soap and water or alcohol-based rub) before and after client contact, before aseptic procedures, and after contact with body fluids. Over-reliance on gloves creates a false sense of security and can reduce hand hygiene compliance. Routine prophylactic antibiotics promote resistance and are not a standard infection prevention strategy.
