A client is diagnosed with Addisonian crisis. Which electrolyte imbalance is expected?

  • AHypernatremia and hypokalemia
  • BHyponatremia and hyperkalemia✓
  • CHypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia
  • DHypercalcemia and hypokalemia
Explanation ·

Addison's disease results from insufficient adrenocortical hormones (aldosterone and cortisol). Aldosterone's main function is to retain sodium and excrete potassium. When the hormone is deficient, the patient loses excessive sodium ions (resulting in hyponatremia) and accumulates potassium ions (resulting in hyperkalemia). The other options do not correspond to the pathophysiologic mechanism of aldosterone deficiency.
