Even when gloves are worn, their surfaces can become contaminated with bacteria; if hands are not washed after glove removal, bacteria can readily transfer to the nurse's hands or the environment. Therefore, performing standard hand-washing (or using alcohol-based hand rub) before and after contact is the simplest and most effective foundation for preventing the spread of nosocomial infection.
