Core concept: The carotid artery is the main vessel supplying cerebral blood flow. Postoperatively, the state of cerebral perfusion is the most critical indicator of patient safety and prognosis. Any change affecting cerebral blood flow may result in serious consequences. Clinical reasoning: According to ABC principles, brain function (C - circulation to the brain) is the most important postoperative consideration.
