知情同意（Informed consent）的過程要求醫師必須向病人詳細說明治療目的、風險、預期效益及替代方案。這是醫師的法律責任。護理師的角色為「見證人（Witness）」，負責確認病人已聽取醫師說明、簽署文件，並評估病人是否有足夠的認知能力簽署同意書，但護理師不能取代醫師進行法律規定的解釋工作。
