第一型糖尿病病人在生病期間，因應激荷爾蒙（Stress Hormones）分泌，身體對胰島素的需求會增加。即使食慾下降，仍不可停用胰島素，否則極易引發糖尿病酮酸中毒（DKA）。病人需增加監測頻率，並在血糖過高（>240 mg/dL）時檢測尿酮。維持水分補給是為了防止因高血糖引起的滲透性利尿導致脫水。
