A nurse is teaching a client to use a cane for walking. What is the correct method?
- APlace the cane 12 inches in front of the feet
- BHold the cane on the weak side
- CHold the cane on the strong side✓
- DKeep the elbow bent at 90 degrees
The correct principle for using a cane is to hold it on the strong (unaffected) side, not the affected side. When the client steps forward with the affected leg, the cane on the strong side moves with the affected leg, effectively shifting weight to the unaffected side, reducing load on the affected leg, and widening the base of support to improve stability. The nurse must ensure that the cane is the correct length and that the elbow is flexed approximately 15 to 30 degrees; excessive flexion or extension impairs balance.
