Troponin is the most specific biomarker for diagnosing myocardial infarction. When myocardial cells are injured or undergo necrosis, these proteins are released into the bloodstream and can be detected within hours of a myocardial infarction, remaining elevated for several days. Compared with other laboratory values, troponin has the highest sensitivity and specificity for myocardial injury and is currently the clinical gold standard for evaluating myocardial damage.
