The muscle tissue of infants is not yet fully developed, and their nerves and blood vessels are densely distributed. The vastus lateralis is the only preferred site for intramuscular injection in infants, because the muscle there is thick enough and remains distant from the major sciatic nerve and blood vessels, effectively reducing the risk of injection injury. Other sites such as the dorsogluteal area are unsuitable because infants often sit for long periods or have an overly thin muscle layer; the deltoid is also unsuitable for infants because the muscle is not yet mature.
