In severe dehydration, extracellular fluid loss reduces tissue elasticity. When the client receives intravenous fluid therapy and the intravascular and interstitial compartments are replenished, skin turgor improves and normal elasticity is restored. This is a direct clinical indicator that the degree of dehydration is improving. Combined with increased urine output, resolution of thirst, and return of the heart rate to normal, this clearly demonstrates that the client's fluid and electrolyte status is stabilizing.
