A client with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) spends hours washing their hands. During the initial stage of treatment, what is the best nursing approach?
- AConfront the client about the irrationality of the behavior
- BAllow the client to complete the ritual to reduce anxiety✓
- CGradually restrict the amount of time allowed for the ritual
- DImmediately stop the behavior to prevent physical skin damage
For clients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), compulsive behaviors (such as hand washing) are the only means of relieving anxiety. In the early phase of treatment, forcibly interrupting the behavior provokes extreme panic. The nursing principle is to first accept the behavior and establish a therapeutic relationship, and then to gradually reduce the time spent on the ritual through behavioral therapy techniques such as response prevention.
