A patient on Furosemide therapy reports muscle weakness and palpitations. Which laboratory result is the nurse most concerned about?
Furosemide is a potent loop diuretic. Its pharmacologic action inhibits the reabsorption of sodium, chloride, and potassium in the renal tubule, leading to large urinary potassium losses. Typical clinical manifestations of hypokalemia include muscle weakness, fatigue, cardiac arrhythmias (palpitations), and constipation, and severe cases can produce lethal arrhythmias. The nurse should pay particular attention to serum potassium levels and address hypokalemia as a priority.
