Furosemide is a loop diuretic. Before administration, the nurse must assess: (1) potassium level (easily depleted); (2) blood pressure (diuresis reduces blood volume, potentially causing hypotension); and (3) daily weight (to evaluate diuretic effectiveness and fluid balance). Although serum creatinine should be monitored periodically, it is not the primary pre-dose assessment for a single dose. Blood glucose may be affected but is not a required pre-dose check.
