Explanation ·

Hypoglycemia is a common emergency in clients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. When the blood glucose level falls (usually <70 mg/dL), the sympathetic nervous system is activated as a stress response, releasing epinephrine and producing tachycardia, diaphoresis, and tremors. At the same time, lack of glucose as fuel for the brain causes neuroglycopenic symptoms such as confusion. The nurse should prioritize recognition of these adrenergic and neuroglycopenic signs so that fast-acting carbohydrate can be administered promptly.
