Intradermal injection is commonly used for allergy testing or tuberculin (PPD) testing. The correct technique requires inserting the needle with the bevel up at a very shallow angle of 5 to 15 degrees into the dermis. The medication is injected slowly, and the goal is to form a clear "bleb" on the skin surface, indicating that the medication has been deposited precisely in the dermal layer. Aspiration and massage are not performed, because massage would push the medication into the subcutaneous tissue and affect test results.
