The clinical signs of infection reflect the body's inflammatory response and immune activation. When a pathogen invades, the body releases cytokines that reset the thermoregulatory set point and produce fever, while damaged local tissues develop redness, swelling, heat, and pain. White blood cell (WBC) count generally rises (leukocytosis) during infection to combat the pathogen rather than falling. Fatigue results from the body's increased metabolic energy expenditure throughout the systemic response. The nurse should evaluate both local and systemic findings in order to recognize the risk of sepsis early.
