The core of sterile technique is maintaining the absolute sterility of the sterile field. The 1-inch (approximately 2.5 cm) border of a sterile drape or sterile package is considered a "boundary zone"; because it may have come into contact with non-sterile surfaces it is regarded as contaminated. Touching this area breaks the sterile barrier and increases the patient's risk of infection. The nurse should strictly limit the working area and touch only the central sterile area to maintain the integrity of sterile technique.
