The sequence for donning and removing personal protective equipment (PPE) is a fundamental infection-control principle. The core principle for removal is to proceed from the most contaminated item to the least contaminated, preventing contaminants from contacting the nurse's skin or mucous membranes. Gloves contact body fluids most often and pose the highest contamination risk, so they are removed first; the gown is removed next; and the facial protection (goggles and mask) is removed last so that the respiratory tract and eyes remain protected throughout the process.
