The gold standard for confirming nasogastric tube placement is radiographic (X-ray) imaging. Although pH testing may provide supportive evidence, an X-ray accurately shows whether the tip is in the stomach and rules out inadvertent placement in the airway. Auscultation of injected air (the whoosh test) has been shown to be unreliable.
