For a grieving client, therapeutic communication is central to supportive care. Loss of a spouse is a profound and complex grief reaction; the client may move through denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Early in grief, clients may feel lost, helpless, and uncertain about the future. The nurse's response should focus on encouraging expression of feelings and conveying empathy. Avoid clichés or premature advice, which can make the client feel dismissed. Offering an open, non-judgmental space allows the client to share freely, which is key to beginning the grief work, building rapport, and identifying needs for targeted support.
