Stoma assessment is a critical part of postoperative care; the focus is on evaluating perfusion and healing. A normal stoma should appear moist, beefy red, and pink, indicating good blood supply. If the stoma becomes purple, black, or pale, this suggests severe ischemia or necrosis, a surgical emergency that requires immediate notification of the physician to prevent perforation or peritonitis. Other findings, such as mild edema and a small amount of drainage, are part of the normal postoperative inflammatory response and usually subside over time.
