插管病人因氣管內管隔絕了上呼吸道防禦，口腔分泌物極易下行導致 VAP，因此徹底口腔清潔是預防 VAP 的核心策略。此外，護理亦能保護黏膜並提升病人舒適度。口腔護理不能取代抗生素治療，也無法對插管病人產生食慾刺激作用。
Because the endotracheal tube bypasses upper-airway defenses, oral secretions easily descend and cause ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP); thorough oral hygiene is the cornerstone of VAP prevention. It also protects mucosal integrity and improves patient comfort. Oral care cannot replace antibiotic therapy, nor can it stimulate appetite in an intubated, NPO client.
