A client with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is performing a ritual. Which goal is most important for the client to achieve during the hospitalization?
- ASupppressing the anxiety without using any coping mechanisms.
- BIdentifying triggers that increase the need for the ritual.✓
- CReplacing the ritual with another more complex ritual.
- DStopping the ritual behavior completely within 48 hours.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by recurrent intrusive obsessions and compulsions (rituals) performed to relieve anxiety. The long-term treatment goal is not only to reduce ritualistic behavior but, more importantly, to help the client understand and identify the underlying anxiety and triggers driving the behavior. Once the client can recognize these triggers, they can learn healthier coping strategies, manage anxiety at its source, and reduce dependence on rituals, achieving more effective disease management.
