Tuberculosis is transmitted via the airborne route. According to standard precautions, caregivers must wear at least an N95-grade respirator to filter the small droplet nuclei. In addition, when there is risk of splashing, a gown and gloves should be worn in accordance with contact precautions. Surgical masks only block droplets and cannot effectively filter Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
