The main goals of using a cane are to widen the base of support and to reduce the weight borne by the affected limb. The cane should be placed on the strong (unaffected) side. When the affected leg and the cane move forward together, body weight is effectively transferred to the strong side, allowing the strong limb and the cane to share the load and providing optimal balance and stability. Placing the cane on the weak side causes the center of gravity to shift toward the affected side, increasing the risk of falls.
