A nurse is teaching a client with peripheral artery disease about foot care. Which interventions should be included? (Select all that apply.)
- AInspect feet daily for sores or skin breakdown✓
- BKeep feet warm by wearing wool socks✓
- CUse a heating pad to warm the feet
- DApply moisturizing lotion between toes
- EAvoid crossing the legs while sitting✓
In peripheral artery disease (PAD), inadequate arterial blood flow results in distal tissue ischemia, decreased sensation, and impaired wound healing. The core nursing goals are to prevent tissue injury and infection and to promote peripheral circulation. Appropriate care includes daily inspection of the skin for early detection of lesions, maintaining warmth to prevent vasospasm, and avoiding positions that compress blood vessels. Conversely, heating pads must be avoided and lotion should not be applied between the toes, to prevent burns and the proliferation of bacteria or fungi.
