A nurse observes a client using a cane. Which observation indicates the client is using the cane correctly?
- AThe elbow is kept straight when holding the cane
- BThe cane is moved forward with the healthy leg
- CThe cane is held on the injured side
- DThe cane is held on the unaffected side✓
When using a cane, it should be held on the unaffected (opposite) side to simulate a normal gait and widen the base of support, transferring weight to the unaffected hand. Holding the cane on the affected side provides insufficient support and increases fall risk. The cane should be advanced simultaneously with the affected leg to maintain stable support. The elbow should maintain approximately 15-30 degrees of flexion rather than full extension, to allow for shock absorption and weight bearing.
台美皆遵循 COAL(Cane Opposite Affected Leg)原則,但台灣衛教常強調拐杖長度設定(大轉子高度),美國則更重視動態步態評估。
