A client is experiencing an acute grief reaction. Which nurse intervention is the most appropriate?
- AMinimize contact to give them space
- BFocus the conversation on the future
- CEncourage the client to talk about the deceased person✓
- DTell them to keep busy so they don't cry
Acute grief is a normal emotional reaction to loss. The core of nursing care is to provide a safe space in which the client can express and integrate feelings of loss (venting and integration). Encouraging the client to talk about the deceased helps them face reality and is the cornerstone of grief counseling. Conversely, ignoring, suppressing, or prematurely changing the subject obstructs the normal grieving process and may lead to complicated grief. The nurse should use therapeutic communication and demonstrate empathy, rather than forcing the client to follow a specific timetable for grieving.
