After total hip arthroplasty, the key is to prevent joint dislocation. Maintaining the affected limb in abduction is central to preventing the femoral head from dislodging from the joint capsule. Adduction, flexion greater than 90 degrees, and internal rotation of the hip must be strictly avoided because these positions can dislodge the prosthesis. Using an abduction pillow keeps the limb lateral to the midline and stabilizes the joint position.
