Explanation ·

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) refers to the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, most commonly in the lower extremities. The most serious complication of DVT is pulmonary embolism (PE) — when the thrombus dislodges and travels with the bloodstream to the pulmonary artery, it can cause acute cardiopulmonary collapse and is life-threatening. The nurse's top priority is therefore to take measures that prevent clot dislodgement and migration. For a patient with confirmed DVT, 'encouraging bed rest and avoiding sudden leg movements' is the key measure to reduce pulmonary embolism risk. Bed rest limits movement of the affected limb, reduces muscular compression of the thrombus, and decreases the chance of dislodgement. Sudden movement or vigorous activity raises venous pressure and makes the clot more likely to dislodge. In the acute phase, this measure is critical for stabilizing the clot and preventing migration to the lungs.
