Digoxin has negative chronotropic effects and can cause bradycardia by slowing conduction through the atrioventricular node. Therefore, it is mandatory to assess the apical pulse for a full minute before administration to ensure the heart rate is within a safe range, typically above 60 beats per minute, to prevent serious arrhythmias.
