Insulin glargine is a long-acting basal insulin. Its structure is designed to release slowly within the body, providing steady, around-the-clock (approximately 24 hours) glycemic control, and therefore has a 'peakless' pharmacokinetic profile. Because of its acidic pH characteristics, mixing with other insulins (such as NPH) is strictly prohibited, as this would alter drug action and cause precipitation.
