When assisting a patient with walking, the nurse should stand on the patient's 'weaker side' and slightly behind. This allows the nurse to support the weaker side immediately if the patient becomes unsteady. For left-sided weakness, the nurse should stand on the patient's left and slightly behind (B). Standing in front (C) obstructs the patient's view and is unsafe; standing on the stronger side (D) cannot provide support where it is most needed. A gait belt should also be used to enhance safety.
