Standard Precautions form the foundation of all patient care, with the goal of preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAI). The core concept is to assume that the blood, body fluids, secretions, excretions, non-intact skin, and mucous membranes of every patient carry potential infectious risk, and therefore that consistent protective measures must be applied regardless of diagnosis. Key components include hand hygiene, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette, and safe injection and sharps handling practices.
