A nurse is caring for a client with hypokalemia. Which finding should the nurse prioritize reporting to the provider?
- ADiminished bowel sounds
- BReports of constipation
- CIrregular heart rhythm on the monitor✓
- DMuscle weakness in the lower extremities
Hypokalemia has a profound effect on myocardial electrophysiology, altering myocardial excitability and producing arrhythmias (such as U waves and premature ventricular contractions). Arrhythmias directly threaten life safety and must be addressed as a priority. Although muscle weakness, constipation, and decreased bowel motility are common symptoms, these represent chronic physiological adaptations; compared with potentially fatal arrhythmias, ECG abnormalities should be reported as the top priority. The nurse should continuously monitor ECG changes and prepare an appropriate potassium replacement regimen.
