The nurse is disposing of contaminated waste after a procedure. Which item must be placed in a puncture-resistant sharps container?
- AA used pair of examination gloves
- BAn empty glass medication ampule✓
- CA disposable plastic syringe without a needle
Proper waste segregation is fundamental to a safe medical environment. The sharps container is designed to prevent health care workers or housekeeping staff from being punctured by 'sharp objects that may carry bloodborne pathogens.' The core concept is that any object with edges or sharp points, or that may break into sharp fragments, must go into a hard-walled container. A glass ampule, once snapped open, creates sharp glass shards and qualifies as a sharp (B). A blood-soaked gauze (D) belongs in a biohazard (red) bag; a disposable plastic syringe without the needle attached (C) may, by many guidelines, be considered general infectious waste (unless local policy directs that the entire syringe be discarded in a sharps container); examination gloves (A) are general medical waste. Clinically, the nurse should intuitively ask, 'Could this object pierce a bag?' If the answer is yes, it must go in the hard-walled container.
