A common and harmless adverse effect of rifampin is the orange-red discoloration of body secretions (such as urine, saliva, sweat, and tears). This is not bleeding, but the nurse must inform the client in advance to prevent alarm. In addition, the client should be advised to avoid wearing contact lenses, since the orange pigment can permanently discolor the lenses. Other antituberculosis drugs such as ethambutol require attention to visual changes.
